Mirrorless Lens Mount Names Explained: E, FE, RF, RF-S, Z, DX, X, MFT and L-Mount

Decode Sony E and FE, Canon RF and RF-S, Nikon Z and DX, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds and L-Mount before buying a lens.

Lens names compress several different facts into a short label. One part may identify the physical mount, another the sensor format, another the product tier, and another the focusing or stabilization technology. Confusing those layers is one of the easiest ways to buy a lens that attaches but does not behave as expected.

The safest method is to read every lens name in this order: physical mount, sensor coverage, electronic compatibility, then product features. Brand alone is never enough.

Mount and sensor format are different specifications

The mount defines the mechanical and electronic interface. Sensor format defines the size of the image area the lens is expected to cover. A system can use one mount for more than one sensor format. Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and L-Mount all illustrate why these ideas must be separated.

A full-frame lens used on a smaller sensor normally covers that sensor, but the field of view becomes narrower. A smaller-format lens on a full-frame body may trigger crop mode, record fewer pixels or show dark corners when the entire sensor is used.

Sony E and FE: one mount, two coverage labels

Sony uses E-mount as the physical mirrorless mount. In common product naming, FE identifies a full-frame E-mount lens. APS-C lenses are often labeled simply “E.” Both use the same physical mount.

An FE lens can be used on an APS-C E-mount body. The lens does not change focal length, but the smaller sensor records a narrower field of view. An APS-C E lens on a full-frame body usually requires a crop. Check the remaining image dimensions if resolution matters.

Canon RF and RF-S: shared RF interface, different coverage

Canon’s current mirrorless system uses the RF mount. RF lenses are generally designed for full-frame coverage. RF-S lenses are designed around APS-C EOS R cameras such as the EOS R7, R10, R50 and R100.

This does not make RF-S a completely separate bayonet in the way Canon EF-M was a separate mount. The important buying question is sensor coverage and how a particular full-frame EOS R body responds to an RF-S lens. Do not assume that physical attachment preserves full-sensor resolution.

Canon labels that should not be mixed

  • RF and RF-S belong to the EOS R mirrorless system.
  • EF and EF-S are DSLR-era mounts that require an EF-to-RF adapter.
  • EF-M belongs to the EOS M system and is not RF.

Nikon Z and DX: Z is the mount; DX is APS-C format

Nikon’s mirrorless bayonet is the Z mount. Nikon uses DX for APS-C-format cameras and lenses. Full-frame products are commonly described as FX-format, although the lens name may simply begin “NIKKOR Z.”

A NIKKOR Z DX lens is therefore a Z-mount lens designed for the smaller DX image area. It can fit compatible Z-mount bodies, but a full-frame body may use a DX crop. A full-frame NIKKOR Z lens can be used on a DX Z camera with the expected narrower field of view.

Nikon F is a different, older mount. F-mount lenses require an FTZ-series adapter for Z bodies, and feature support depends on the lens generation.

Fujifilm X, XF and XC: mount versus lens family

Fujifilm X mount is the physical mount used by X Series interchangeable-lens cameras. XF and XC identify lens families within that mount. They are not two incompatible bayonets.

XF products commonly emphasize broader controls, brighter apertures, premium construction or specialist designs. XC products generally emphasize compact size, accessibility and lower weight. Those are product-family tendencies, not a substitute for reading the individual specifications.

Fujifilm G mount is different. GF lenses for GFX medium-format cameras do not become X-mount lenses because both are made by Fujifilm.

Micro Four Thirds: a shared mount still needs feature checks

Micro Four Thirds—often abbreviated MFT or M43—is a shared mirrorless standard used by companies including OM System/Olympus and Panasonic. The common mount creates a large native lens pool and broad physical compatibility.

Shared mount does not mean every feature is identical across brands. Lens and body stabilization coordination, aperture rings, custom buttons, focus stacking, correction data and video behavior can depend on the combination. Verify features that matter to your workflow, especially when mixing manufacturers.

L-Mount: one alliance across brands and formats

L-Mount is used by multiple alliance members and supports full-frame and APS-C cameras. This creates unusually broad cross-brand possibilities among compatible L-Mount bodies and lenses.

The alliance describes the mount as a common standard, but a careful buyer still checks image-circle format, firmware, autofocus modes, correction profiles, teleconverter support and camera-specific functions. The logo establishes the interface; it does not eliminate model-level research.

Third-party lenses require the complete model name

Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Viltrox, Tokina and other manufacturers may sell visually similar versions of a lens for several mounts. A listing title that states only “for Sony,” “for Canon” or “mirrorless” is not precise enough.

  • Confirm the mount in the complete product name.
  • Compare the manufacturer part number.
  • Inspect a clear photo of the rear mount and contacts.
  • Verify sensor coverage separately.
  • Check firmware and camera-model compatibility.

Adapted lenses need both source and destination mounts

An adapter description should identify the lens mount first and camera mount second: for example, Canon EF lens to Sony E camera. Reversing that direction describes a different product and may not be optically possible.

Confirm flange-distance compatibility, infinity focus, aperture control, autofocus, stabilization, metadata, teleconverter use and tripod-foot requirements. The adapter itself becomes part of the optical-mechanical system even when it contains no glass.

Do not confuse product tier with compatibility

Letters such as G, GM, L, S, PRO, Art, Contemporary, WR, LM, STM, USM and OIS usually describe product family, construction or technology. They do not replace the mount and format checks. A premium lens for the wrong mount remains incompatible, while a modest lens for the correct mount can be the better practical choice.

Retailer titles can omit or rearrange labels. Use the manufacturer’s model number and official specification page as the final reference, especially when two versions share the same focal length and aperture.

A reliable name-decoding workflow

  1. Identify the exact camera and native mount.
  2. Identify the lens’s physical mount.
  3. Compare sensor coverage.
  4. Decode product-family labels such as FE, RF-S, DX, XF or XC.
  5. Decode focus and stabilization labels.
  6. Verify model number, firmware and feature support.
  7. Only then compare price and condition.

This order prevents price from pulling the research toward the wrong product. A bargain becomes relevant only after the compatibility chain is complete.

Are Sony E and FE different physical mounts?
