Sony's new 70-200mm f/4.0 G OSS FE is a high quality telephoto zoom in a handy size for Sony E Mount Cameras. Being an FE lens it covers full frame sensors but it's equally useful on APS sized sensor Alpha Mirrorless (or earlier NEX) E System Cameras. The lens is an impressive combination of optics and technology packaged into a compelling solution for photographers wanting a high performance telephoto zoom that is reasonably compact and handles better than a f/2.8 telephoto zoom. Lighter and more compact E system telephotos zooms exist but no other offer the flexibility of an f/4 aperture all the way through for or the same level of optical performance. The f/4 aperture allows increased background blur for stand out portraits and makes shooting in low light easier. Image quality is exceptional thanks to a highly corrected optical formula of 21 elements in 15 groups including one Super ED glass element, two ED glass elements, one Aspherical element, and two Advanced Aspherical elements as well as state of the art Nano-AR anti reflective coating, and a 9 bladed circular aperture mechanism all working together to deliver excellent sharpness, contrast, and bokeh. The Optical Steady Shot system detects camera/lens movement and moves lens elements to offset the movement which reduces loss of sharpness and allows easier use of slower shutter speeds. Two Steady Shot modes are provided via a switch on the barrel: Mode 1 for normal shooting and Mode 2 for panning while shooting. The Internal focus design uses dual linear motors for responsive accurate focus. A focus distance limit switch provides the option of the full focus range or a narrower range of infinity to 3 meters for even faster focusing at distance.
