Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS AF Lens

Sony FE 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6 G OSS is a full-frame E-mount telephoto zoom for outdoor travel, portraits, nature and occasional sports. Its 70mm starting point is more versatile for mixed subjects than a dedicated 200–600mm super-telephoto, but its 300mm limit and variable aperture restrict demanding bird and low-light work.

Our used-buying recommendation

Sony FE 70–300mm G OSS (SEL70300G) is designed for full-frame Sony E mount; compatible APS-C E bodies use a narrower field of view. The catalog sensor-format field is currently blank, so verify the exact model and features against Sony specifications before purchasing.

Best for

  • Travel and outdoor photographers wanting 70–300mm coverage
  • Nature details and larger wildlife within moderate shooting distances
  • Sony full-frame or APS-C E-mount owners seeking stabilized telephoto framing

Why it stands out

  • The 70–300mm focal range transitions from short telephoto portraits toward distant details without changing lenses.
  • Optical SteadyShot assists against handheld camera shake for stationary subjects; action still needs a suitable shutter speed.
  • FE full-frame image coverage also permits use on compatible APS-C E-mount bodies with a narrower recorded angle of view.

Things to consider

  • 300mm may be insufficient for small or faraway birds when compared with 400–600mm alternatives.
  • Its f/4.5–5.6 maximum aperture is more restrictive in fading light than a faster constant-aperture telephoto.
  • Check the exact SEL70300G model, not a similar A-mount or other 70–300mm lens; assess size and long-end handling.

Compatibility notes

Sony FE 70–300mm G OSS (SEL70300G) is designed for full-frame Sony E mount; compatible APS-C E bodies use a narrower field of view. The catalog sensor-format field is currently blank, so verify the exact model and features against Sony specifications before purchasing.

Additional listing information

The Sony G 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 FE OSS (Sony part# SEL70300G) is a premium telephoto zoom for Sony Alpha E Mount mirrorless digital cameras.   It's a popular lens with a very practical zoom range that's useable for everything from portraits to sports & action.

Thanks to it's strong magnification, the 70-300mm is a great general purpose telephoto lens for travel and nature photography. Sony 'FE' (Full frame E mount) lenses have optics that completely cover big 'full frame' 35mm format sized sensors; FE lenses are also useable on E Mount Sony cameras with APS-C sized sensors.

When used on APS-C sensor cameras, the cropped image from the 70-300mm G has a field of view equivalent to using a 105-450mm lens on 35mm format. Sony engineered the 70-300mm G with a variable maximum aperture design to keeping it's size and weight manageable.

The maximum aperture (which varies from f/4.5 to 5.6 depending on how much you zoom) is more than adequate for daylight shooting.   With higher ISO settings and/or Sony's excellent Optical Steady Shot Image Stabilization (or a tripod) the 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G OSS is also very useable in other situations depending on available light levels and subject matter.

This lens is perfect for Sony shooters getting who want a seriously high quality telephoto zoom and the superlative images it can produce without being weighed down.
