Aperture and focal length explained for mirrorless photographers.

Focal length determines how much of the scene fits into the frame. Aperture controls how much light the lens can transmit and influences depth of field. Together, they shape both the technical exposure and the visual character of an image.

What focal length changes

Focal length is expressed in millimeters. A shorter focal length records a wider angle of view, while a longer focal length records a narrower portion of the scene. Focal length also changes how close or far away a photographer normally stands from the subject.

What aperture changes

Aperture is represented by an f-number such as f/1.8, f/2.8 or f/8. A smaller f-number represents a wider opening. A wider aperture can transmit more light and can produce shallower depth of field. A narrower aperture transmits less light and can keep a greater range of distances acceptably sharp.

Maximum aperture is particularly important when photographing moving subjects in limited light, when creating strong background separation, or when trying to keep ISO lower. A bright lens does not need to be used at its widest aperture for every photograph.

Sensor size and field of view

The same focal length produces a different field of view on different sensor formats. A lens mounted on an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds camera records a narrower portion of its image circle than it does on a full-frame camera.

Crop-factor comparisons are useful for estimating field of view, but they do not physically change the focal length printed on the lens. Mount compatibility and sensor coverage must also be checked separately.

How the two work together

A long focal length combined with a wide aperture can create strong subject separation. A wide lens stopped down can keep foreground and distant elements more clearly represented. Camera-to-subject distance, background distance and focus distance remain important in both situations.

A practical buying sequence

  1. Identify the native camera mount.
  2. Decide which angle of view is missing from the current kit.
  3. Determine whether low-light capability or shallow depth of field is important.
  4. Compare lens size, weight, stabilization and focusing behavior.
  5. Compare current used condition grades and included accessories.
